About Portocolom and surrounding area:

Portocolom Mallorca

View over the beach of Porto Colom

Porto Colom is a picturesque harbour town on the southeast coast of the island. Many of the 4,500 residents are convinced that Christopher Columbus was born here.

The largest natural harbour on the island

To this purpose there is no evidence other than the village name. It is more likely that the fishing village was named Porto Colom in honour of the great navigator. The huge natural harbour would have certainly impressed Christopher Columbus. The largely unspoilt bay has been guarded by a picturesque blue and white lighthouse since 1863.

Coast Porto Colom

Coast of Porto Colom

Porto Colom is still one of the most important fishing ports of the island and countless boats lie in anchor here protected from the waves. Among them are many so-called Llauts, so traditional Mallorcan wooden boats. Once Porto Colom was a major trading centre for the wines from the surrounding land which now carries the title of "Pla i Llevant", a protected area of unspoilt land. Wine was exported in the 19th century in large quantities to France before phylloxera lowered the yields.

The original charm of Mallorca

The compact old town of Porto Colom has hardly changed in the last decades. The time seems to stand still here, which is appreciated by both visitors and locals. Every Tuesday and Saturday the market stalls are set up between the picturesque fishermen's houses. Many visitors combine shopping with a stroll along the promenade and a "café con leche" in one of the cosy bars. The old town of Porto Colom, called "Es Riuetó", is a peaceful and relaxing place where you can still get to know the real Mallorca.

Beaches in close proximity

Adjoining the harbour bay in a southerly direction is the popular bay of Cala Marcal. The wide sandy beach has a blue flag, which indicates safe swimming conditions and a good infrastructure. The surrounding rocks are ideal for a jump into the crystal clear water.

Those who prefer the sea at ground level, take a 10 minute walk to Cala Brafi, a rocky bay, which is especially recommended for snorkelers. Other top beaches such as Cala Sa Nau or the Cales de Mallorca are only a few minutes away by car. eine Felsenbucht, die besonders für Schnorchler zu empfehlen ist. Weitere Top-Strände wie die Cala Sa Nau oder die Cales de Mallorca sind nur wenige Autominuten entfernt.

Leisure facilities on the doorstep

Porto Colom is a sports town, which has had its own Triathlon School since 2013. The "TriStar Mallorca Triathlon" is held every year in April at distances of 55.5 km and 111 km. But not just endurance athletes are catered for. Golfers flock to the club "Vall d'Or", an 18-hole course, which sits almost over Porto Colom. The course has a par of 71 and inspires with its harmonious greens embedded in the hills.

As for diving, Porto Colom is one on the diving hotspots of the island thanks to its intact underwater world and numerous dive caves. Friends of sailing also flock to the harbour town.

A place for explorers

Perhaps Porto Colom is perhaps also named after Christopher Columbus, because it wants to be discovered by new guests. So far the idyllic port town has just a few foreign residents. Some live in the residential area "Sa Punta", from which you look across at the picturesque lighthouse on the other side of the bay. The luxurious houses on the seafront are among the jewels in the portfolio of real estate agents.
