Colonia de Sant Pere is one of the places in Majorca just waiting to be discovered. Most miss out the cosy village as they race along the highway from Artà to Alcudia. However, a visit is well worth the effort. After just a few hundred metres you will be enchanted by the peace of the typical Majorcan countryside.
There are plentiful almond and olive trees, as well as sheep grazing in the backdrop of the Sierra de Llevant mountains. The protruding peak of the 522 metre high Puig de Ferrutx is especially impressive. The mountain offers a fantastic view over the entire Tramuntana to Cap Formentor. From here you can see the Possessió Devesa Ferrutx with its reconstructed defensive tower.
The property was built in 1302 and even served the Majorcan King James II as a hunting lodge. In the 14th century, the large plot of land passed into private ownership. For several years the famous Majorcan artist Miquel Barceló lived and worked here. He redesigned among other buildings, the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament in the right aisle of Palma's Cathedral.
Near the historic Jagdguts, the settlement Colonia de Sant Pere was founded in 1880. In the 60s, the adjacent housing developments Betlem, Montferrutx and s'Estanyol were added. 553 people live permanently in Colonia de Sant Pere. Anyone who owns a chalet here in first line, is one step closer to happiness. However, a property with mountain views in Colonia Sant Pere also has quite the appeal.
Calm and tranquillity you will find here in any case. Although visited by tourists, it does become overcrowded during the high season. This is due to the uniform one-or two-story buildings. Colonia Sant Pere just does not want to be a popular tourist destination - and that's a good thing.
Below the promenade stretches an 80 metre long and 20 metre wide sandy beach. Those needing a little more space, go to the 1800 metre long beach "Arenal de Sa Canova", which is located west of the settlement S'Estanyol. In the wooded area behind it you can also make a visit to the settlement remains of Talaiot-culture.
In the evening, tourists and locals meet at the small port of Colonia Sant Pere. A glamorous atmosphere you should not expect here. For the port exudes a typical Majorcan peacefulness. Behind the natural stone harbour are anchored countless boats of all sizes, 15-metre yachts and small fishing-boats share the anchorages.
Among the tamarind trees on the water front three local establishments share their international crowd. Insiders rave about the sunsets that can be seen particularly well in Colonia de Sant Pere. The ridge of the Tramuntana illuminates the most beautiful sunsets as the sun sets behind the mountains.
For a trip featuring an approx. 5 kilometre walk, the Ermita de Betlem is recommended. The hermitage was inhabited until 2010 by a group of monks. These farmed the terraced fields that are irrigated by a year-round bubbling spring. The neo-classical chapel of the hermitage can be visited. Especially the colourful dome frescoes by Francesc Parietti are worth seeing.
