Bay of Canyamel
Did you know that sugarcane was one produced in Majorca? The name of the area Canyamel (Catalan canya de mel) is derived from a license for the cultivation of sugar cane, which was acquired by the landowner in 1428. Today there is nothing more to see of the former plantation, even if the tall reeds that grow on the banks of the River Torrente de Canyamel, that are vaguely reminiscent of sugarcane.
The Torrente de Canyamel forms the boundary between two very different districts. Along the forested pine slope leading to Cap Vermell, you find exclusive prime properties like pearls on a string series. The top location includes not only an exquisite view of the sea, but also an 18-hole golf course in the immediate neighbourhood. Designed by José Gancedo, the complex lies in complete harmony with the landscape. The course has a par of 73 and is considered one of the most difficult of the island.
Luxury real estate in Cap Vermell
On the other side of the Torrente de Canyamel you find the tourist part of the village with only 422 inhabitants. Just behind the 300-metre-long sandy beach you see hotel after hotel lined up. In the summer there is plenty of life on the wide streets and in the two cosy beer gardens.
In winter, however, Canyamel acts as though extinct. Most hotels are closing their doors in late September. Until November, the Can Simonet has opened a 5-star country hotel in top location. The hotel is perched on the cliffs of Canyamel, offering unobstructed sea views. On the manicured grounds are two lovingly restored properties dating from the 18th century. The rooms have a front row seat for enjoying the incredible sunrise every morning.
From the pool you can easily see the Caves of Arta, which are a must see. The spectacular stalactite formations are artfully set in scene with light installations and do not bear comparison with the famous Caves of Drach. A well-secured path leads through several halls; the largest of which has approximately the volume of the Cathedral of Palma. A particularly intricate stalagmite, the so-called pillar queen, projects 22 metres into the air. 1841 a UK company offered 25 000 pounds for this stalagmite, but fortunately, the purchase did not materialize.
The Coves de Arta are one of Majorca's oldest attractions, a guestbook contains entries from Victor Hugo, Jules Verne and the Archduke Leopold Salvator of Austria. Even before visiting these these famous people searched for a pirate refuge in the cave system. In addition, the last Moorish soldiers found a refuge here when Majorca was reconquered by the Christians.
Another historical landmark is the Torre de Canyamel. Built in the Middle Ages, the fortified tower was used by the local farmers as a refuge in case of a pirate attack. Today on the ground floor of the tower you can look at the old weapons which served to ward off the invaders. The Torre de Canyamel now serves not only as a museum, but also as a unique setting for concerts. The 2014 Piano Festival of Canyamel took place for the third time this year, which was occupied by renowned international artists.
