Campanet on a hill northwest of Mallorca
Campanet is situated on a narrow hill northwest of the island, in the so called area of Raiguer. The village is small, privately located, of charming character - a typically labyrinthine and original rural village. The best preserved village houses for living and holidays are found here. Among these are genuine pearls so as historic manor houses, as well as romantic country side fincas. Due to its elevated position the village and its surrounding offer impressing views to the beautiful landscape and mountains.
The village square is always busy: The impressive parish church with its plain façade and the small Madonnas above the church door are dominating the scene. The market square is bordered by green trees with magnificent palm trees in the middle and in front of the church. Three bars are having their tables and chairs placed at the margin of the village centre. It is fantastic to sit in the bar “Es Club”on Tuesdays, the market day, having a “café con leche” and a “pa amb oli” watching what is going on in the market.
Plaza in Campanet
There are only a few market stands but they offer all you need, especially fresh vegetables. Perfect for sightseeing is the chapel of Sant Miguel from the 13th century, the museum Posada de Biniatró in an impressing manor house with contemporary art and sculptures of various artists from the island as well as the glassblowing Menestraliam situated a little remote. In terms of music, the village offers the following: Every year the municipality organizes the spring concert “Primavera Musical a Campanet”.
The village of Campanet has 2.600 inhabitants and is therefore a small village. Surprisingly the number of inhabitants has more or less stayed the same over the last 150 years (the mini village of Ullaró with only two dozen inhabitants forms part of the municipality). Nobody knows the exact age of Campanet, it is only known that it has been inhabited since prehistoric times and its name was given by the Arabs. Whoever thinks only elderly people are living here is wrong: especially in the evenings, young people also from villages nearby are crowding up in the bars.
Hikers are attracted by its position at the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains, even though the third largest city on the island, Inca, is only 8 km away. There you have many shopping possibilities, especially for leather goods and footwear and excellent restaurants, e.g. the quaint “Celler Can Amer”. But also the surrounding villages of Moscari, Selva and Caimari are enchanting. Best dishes can be eaten in the country hotel of “Can Calco” in Moscari or in “Ca Na Toneta” in Caimari, amongst others. Mallorca’s most popular monastery “Monasterio de Lluc” and the planetarium of Costitx are also nearby. For whom loves swimming can find great beaches at the bay of Alcudia, only 18 km away.
Campanet is especially popular fort two things: the caves approx. 3 km away from the village with small underground lakes and with luxuriant, almost white stalagmite and stalactite formations are a gem among the five well-known caves of Mallorca. They are far away from the mass tourism of the east coast caves. The “Ses Coves” of Campanet are small and natural, as there are no light or music events. Its terrace offers a fantastic view.
An impressive natural spectacle only occurring in the municipality of Campanet is legendary: the fountains “Ses Font Ufanes” at the oak forrest on an estate. These fountains are only appearing in autumn or winter and only if it rained strongly for some time.
Pueblo Campanet
The water may bubble out of the ground for some hours or even days, and then the fountains may disappear for some years. In any event it is a magic experience at a magic place on the island.
