As a successful real estate business, we believe we also have a corporate responsibility to society, and therefore donate part of our advertising budget to various aid projects. In the past we have supported the “Mundo de Niños” association that looks after street children in Peru, as well as ASPAYM Illes Balears, an organisation that assists people with disabilities.
In 2014 we are pledging our support to a very special project, founded by the Lions Club Majorca: the “Comida para todos” campaign. For many people, one hot meal every day is not something they can take for granted. And that’s also the case in Majorca – the island that stands for holidays, sunshine, easygoing living and carefree pleasure.
This is the shadow side of the sunshine island.
The Majorcan branch of the worldwide charitable organisation set up this project in 2010 because the gap between rich and poor was becoming ever wider on the biggest Balearic island. Around one-fifth of Majorca’s population now lives below the poverty line. Little can be expected in the way of official help: the Spanish state limits social assistance payments to just a few months, and the long-term unemployed receive no financial support.
In conjunction with the biggest German food discount supermarket on the island, the Lions Club Majorca is engaged in distributing food that has been donated free of charge and hygiene products to those in need. These items are passed on to many institutions (the Capuchin Brotherhood, “Comedor Zaqueo”, the “Monasterio de la Real”, the “Can Gaza” homeless shelter, etc.) in Palma, who then deliver them to those who need them. This may be in the form of food packages for families, for example, or breakfast or a hot meal for senior citizens, children or homeless people. All donations go entirely to the project; the Lions Club finances the delivery van, petrol and the driver who collects the products and brings them to the aid organisations.
In the meantime around one ton of goods for those in need is being delivered every day. We are delighted that our financial involvement is contributing to the success of this project. Would you like to make a donation too? Every euro counts. You can find out more about the “Comida para Todos” project on the Lions Club Majorca website.
