The mermaid amongst Mallorca’s artists

For discoverers of art: A visit to the studio of the artist Vivian Borsani in Santa Catalina ''Always be yourself until you are a mermaid, then always be a mermaid'', a quote by the author Penelope Pewter translated from the English perfectly suits the artist Vivian Birsani. The Mallorca resident has lived in many countries, something which is typical for creative people who settle on the island. Her art reflects beauty, vitality, and a myriad of colours found on the Mediterranean just as in the tropics. Whether fish, flowers or blossoms – nature and the sea play a leading role in Vivian's powerful, wild, almost unrestrained brush strokes. After all, this positive person was born in Brasil where she spent the first six years of her life before her family moved to Hamburg. Her arti...

Sundry tax information – what owners of Mallorca real estate need to know in 2018

The acquisition There are three ways to become the owner of a property – buy it, inherit it, or receive it as a gift. A buyer has to deal either with sales tax (10% on completed residential real estate) or with land transfer tax (8 to 11 per cent).  In the case of an inheritance worth up to 700.000 euros the heir pays a Balearic inheritance tax of 1 per cent, always providing that he is a direct relative (spouse, child, grandchild or also, for example, parents) and has no other Spanish assets. Beware: In the case of other family relationships (brother, daughter-in-law, etc.) it becomes much more expensive. In the case of gifts, under the same ideal conditions as for inheritance the recipient would pay 7 per cent gift tax. Beware: The tax consequences for the benefactor can be consi...

Moving to Mallorca – How to become a resident

Those who wish to live and work in Mallorca can not avoid a few bureaucratic steps. We will show you the way. A dream comes true: You have decided to enjoy the island the whole year round and want to make it the central part of your life, which means that you will spend over 183 days a year there. Taking the step of moving your life, and possibly also that of your family, to sunny Mallorca should be well thought out and carefully planned. What must I do?  The first step is, if appropriate, to de-register from your country of residence assuming that you want to permanently move to Spain. In Germany there has been, since 2015, a statutory deregistration law if you give up your domicile and do not have another. It is, however, not important for the registration in Spain whether you h...
